A relocated airport terminal building transformed into an eye-catching café.
From a dilapidated eyesore to the jewel in Lyall Bay’s crown, the Spruce Goose was transformed from an old relocated airport terminal building into an eye-catching café in a seismic strengthening and fitout project completed by our Wellington team.
The interior has a spacious open feel due to the large sliding doors and windows, giving exceptional views of the ocean. The building boasts large sliding doors that open out onto the immaculately crafted, exposed aggregate patios, giving a smooth indoor/outdoor flow.
The upper floor has a bar and a large open entertainment area and a set of east facing sliding doors that open onto an upstairs deck. This deck, made of environmentally friendly decking material, is bordered by a toughened glass balustrade to shelter patrons from the elements, and is connected to the glass canopy over the patio below.
There are landscaped patios to the east and west of the café, planted with hardy native shrubs.
Despite the challenging location, just 10 metres from the shoreline in Lyall Bay and exposed to the full force of Wellington’s southerly winds, the team has produced a beautiful, rejuvenated building.
